What We Study

Music at Newlands places practical music-making at the heart of learning. Through performance, composition, listening and singing, students explore music as a universal language and one of the highest forms of creativity. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of music, nurture talent, and develop the skills and confidence that enable students to thrive both as musicians and as individuals.

Our Facilities

The Music Department is housed in a purpose-built facility, featuring two teaching rooms, six fully equipped practice rooms (each with a piano, drum kit and amplifier), a large rehearsal space and a recording studio.

Students also benefit from access to specialist software, including Sibelius, MuseScore and Soundtrap. Our extensive range of instruments from djembes and steel pans to guitars, keyboards and orchestral percussion, ensures students can explore a rich and diverse musical landscape.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, students follow a broad and engaging curriculum, exploring music from a wide range of styles, genres and cultures. They develop practical skills alongside perseverance and problem-solving through ensemble work and independent practice.

Regular performance opportunities build confidence, while composition tasks spark creativity and critical thinking. Collaboration, communication and resilience lie at the heart of students’ musical development.

Key Stage 4 & Key Stage 5 (GCSE & A Level Music)

At GCSE and A Level, students build on the strong foundations established at Key Stage 3. They refine their performance and composition skills, deepen their understanding of musical theory and analysis, and engage with a diverse and inspiring repertoire.

Outcomes are consistently strong, with many students choosing to continue their study of music at university and beyond.

We offer an extensive programme of concerts and events throughout the year, including:

The year culminates in a large-scale summer musical, involving over 150 students in a truly memorable production.

Leadership & Enrichment

Student leadership is central to our ethos. Ensemble Captains play an active role in leading groups and supporting younger musicians, fostering confidence, responsibility and a strong sense of community.
