Business & Economics
What We Study
Business and Economics helps students understand how organisations operate, how decisions are made and how economic forces shape society. Students explore themes such as enterprise, markets, finance, globalisation and strategic decision-making, developing the analytical and evaluative skills needed to interpret real-world events.
Key Stage 3
Business and Economics is not taught as a discrete subject at Key Stage 3. However, students develop transferable skills across the curriculum, including financial awareness, critical thinking, decision-making and an understanding of how the world around them functions.
Key Stage 4
At GCSE, students explore how businesses start, grow and respond to challenges. They study key areas including marketing, operations, finance and human resources, learning how business decisions are made and how external influences can affect success. Students apply their knowledge to contemporary case studies, developing strong analytical, evaluative and problem-solving skills.
Key Stage 5: A-level
A Level Business and A Level Economics allow students to explore organisations, markets and economic systems in greater depth. Students analyse data, evaluate strategies and investigate how political, social and global influences shape decision-making. Both courses develop confident, independent thinkers who can interpret complex information and communicate well-reasoned arguments.
Key Stage 5: BTEC
BTEC Business offers students the opportunity to study a range of business disciplines through either the BTEC Extended Certificate or the BTEC Diploma. Students explore areas including marketing, finance, human resources and management, applying their knowledge to real-world business scenarios. Assessment is through a combination of coursework and external assessment, and both qualifications develop confident, independent learners who can analyse business decisions and communicate informed judgements.
Beyond the Classroom
Students are encouraged to take part in enterprise activities, competitions and real-world investigations that enhance their understanding of business and economics.
Through initiatives such as the Tycoon Enterprise Competition, Sixth Form students have the opportunity to establish and run their own businesses, developing valuable employability and enterprise skills.
Students also benefit from enrichment opportunities, including guest speakers from industry who share their experiences and insights. Recent speakers have included a successful entrepreneur who appeared on Dragons’ Den and built a business trading both nationally and internationally, providing students with a valuable understanding of entrepreneurship and business growth. Educational visits, such as a trip to the MINI Plant Oxford, enable students to see business operations and manufacturing processes in action, bringing classroom learning to life.
Students are also encouraged to participate in programmes such as ‘We Can Be’, which gives young women the opportunity to engage with leading organisations, explore a range of industries and develop career confidence through immersive activities and workplace experience,
