07/05/10 I just wanted to share with you that we are immensely proud of the year 7 rounders squad. We had our first league match last night and they were just fabulous! They were focused, enthused, friendly and fair. A real credit to the school.

Results so far...

Newlands A beat Trevellyan 9 1/2 to 7 1/2
Newlands A beat Altwood 17 1/2 to 7
Then A team played the B team but it was still very close with B team losing out by 2 1/2 rounders.
Newlands B lost to Charters A 11 to 18

Netball-Match Reports – 30th September

Newlands A vs Furze Platt A
Newlands Victory 19-6

Team:
Jess Staily
Lily Norton - Captain
Danielle Bui
Katy McCormack
Georgia Cort
Danielle Moore
Hannah Woffinden
Annie Rose

A brilliant start to the season for the year 8 A team beating Furze Platt A with a final score of 19-6. Leading from the start, at the end of the 1st half the score was 12-1, thanks to Hannah & Danielle Moore consistently scoring and a strong defence. At half time there were some position changes and Annie was swapped on. The team continued strong in the 2nd half and scored a further 8 goals, this was helped by the fantastic support and advice given continuously by the B team and Sports Prefects from the side lines.
The opposition commented after that our “goal shooter is AMAZING!” So well done Hannah !

Newlands B vs Furze Platt B
Furze Platt Victory 8-4

Team:
Anna McQuade - Captain
Anna Wheeler
Emma Holloway
Maria R
Izzy Jobson
Anoop Johal
Amelia Thompson
Amy Bartlett

During the early match the B team were free so were sent by Georgia & Hannah to suss out the competition, weaknesses in mind the team started confidently. In the 1st half the two teams were fairly even and play was going well. However part of the way through, Maria fell onto her ankle and had to shuffle off court as she couldn’t put any weight on it to walk, luckily Amy was there to save the day and joined in straight away. At half time Newlands were one goal down and during the second half our defence defiantly improved their marking. However Furze Platt also stepped up their play and scored a further 5 goals. The team were determined to get at least half the amount of goals of the opposition as this would earn them an important point (which they did 8-4). Considering the bias and grumpiness of the umpire from Furze Platt, the team should be pleased with their performance, and as it was the first match of the season I’m sure they will continue to improve.

Waking up early on a Sunday morning was not the greatest aspect of the day however it did get better with the team singing on the bus ride down and also the weather was hot with the sun shinning down on us at Wellington College. Great play by all the girls; working well as a team even with a couple of training sessions together to get themselves fit and play hockey together. The ball was worked extremely well but we came up against some extremely hard competition like our old rivals Pangbourne, Wellignton and St. Mary’s. We were unfortunate in our first two games but game back in the last game with a Go Go Gryffindor Chant to draw the game and not to come bottom of the group. A special mention goes out to the youth of the under 18’s that stepped up to play a year or so above their age group; but also to Ellie Byrne and Rachel Coop for returning to the team after a seasons absence.

Back to Wellington College we went as we returned for the indoor tournament. Once again we came up against a tough group with all teams bring their own style to the floor. We went in strong from the moment the whistle blew and never stopped fighting as the tournament progressed. As the games came forward the team played better and better showing great improvements in every match; working as a team and getting the ball moving up the pitch with some excellent dribbling by Jas Gill and Gina Catley which followed some promising and near misses by both forwards and defence. Our efforts shone in our final match of the tournament against Leyton Park moving together as a team in harmony and finally reaping the rewards of all our hard work. The team would like to say a big thank you to Miss Claxton and Miss Burns for taking us to the tournament and for all the encouragement and support!
