Sixth Form

Welcome to the Sixth Form at Newlands Girls’ School

About Us

We are a thriving community of just over 250 and we are expanding each year. We moved into a new Sixth Form Centre during 2011 which has study and social facilities and classrooms for Sixth Form use.

Most of our students stay on, attracted by the wide range of courses and the consistently excellent AS and A2 results (we are currently in the top 25% of schools in the country in terms of ALPS statistics) and we also find that a significant number of girls from other school want to continue their studies at Newlands. In addition, each year we find that several students, having initially begun an A level programme at local colleges and grammar schools, return to us for the support and good teaching they know they will receive.

As well as receiving excellent teaching, students are able to benefit from focussed and supportive pastoral care which begins with helping students to make the transition to KS5 at the beginning of Year 12 and ends with ensuring students feel comfortable with their university or career choices. Along the way, students have access to academic mentoring and support which is designed to draw out the potential in all students and set achievable targets in order to generate success.

“Standards are well above national averages and achievement is good. Teaching and learning are consistently good. Teachers have good subject knowledge and expertise, with the best lessons characterised by clear objectives, a brisk pace and challenging activities.

Opportunities for independent learning are well-developed and the quality of care is good. As one girl commented, 'The teachers know my needs and they know me.' “ (Ofsted Report, January 2008)
