Ascot and Maidenhead School Sport Partnership been in existence for 6 years. It incorporates 36 schools in Maidenhead & Ascot plus a FE College (BCA), with Charters School as host, due to its Specialist Sports College status (6 secondary schools – Charters, Newlands, Furze Platt, Altwood, Desborough & Cox Green) and all 30 primary schools in Maidenhead & Ascot.

Ascot and Maidenhead School Sport Partnership is part of a national network of School Sport Partnerships focusing on provision of high quality PE and school sport for young people aged 5 to 19 years.

We work with schools to support 2 hours delivery of high quality PE curriculum for all pupils plus 1 hour of out of hours sport or physical activity provision per week. School Sport Partnerships also work with a range of external partners including Local Authorities, National Governing Bodies of Sport, County Sport Partnerships and local sports clubs to signpost pathways for young people to participate in sport and work together towards achieving the 5 hour offer of sport for all young people.

Young Ambassadors 2010/11

Introducing Ella Campbell and Hannah Moore – Newlands Young Ambassadors 2010/11 (pictured here on the left, with our platinum Young Ambassadors, Katie Taylor and Katie Stevenson, and the head of our Olympic Group, Lauren Martin.)

Our Young Ambassadors have been very busy this term, attending conferences and meetings to learn all about their new role. In September they attended a regional conference at The Brit Oval, where they met other Young Ambassadors from all over the region, met Olympians and Paralympians and were inspired by their stories, and learned a variety of different ways to engage young people in physical activity.

On 8th October they attended the Berkshire Young Ambassadors conference at Dorney Lake where the focus was on learning how to be a better Young ambassador and hearing a wide variety of examples of how experienced Young Ambassadors have helped to get young people involved in getting excited about the Olympics and engaging them in new activities.

Katie and Katie, our platinums, delivered one of these session to the entire group of 140 Young ambassadors!!

This morning, 20th October 2010, our new Young Ambassadors, Ella and Hannah, took a Year 7 assembly based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values. They showed a video, and introduced the Olympic Passport that pupils have in their planners, whilst also demonstrating how the Year 7 pupils can live the values in their everyday lives.

ASCOT AND MAIDENHEAD SCHOOL SPORT PARTNERSHIP YEAR 4/5 HI 5 NETBALL TOURNAMENT

On Tuesday 30th March, 13 year 4 and 5 netball teams from primary schools in the partnership came to Newlands to compete in the Partnership round of the Year 4/5 Hi 5 Netball tournament. We prayed hard for dry weather and these were almost answered (well, for the first hour anyway).

Each school was greeted by their allocated leader (a year 10 leadership student from Newlands), who took complete responsibility for the well being of the team for the duration of the tournament. They were responsible for making sure the team were warmed up, in the right place at the right time, in the correct positions and they also handed out stickers for good play, positive attitudes and excellent effort.

At the end of the tournament, they rewarded their teams with certificates of participation, and also selected pupils in their team to receive special certificates for demonstrating the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship.
All the teams showed real perseverance and enthusiasm, especially when the weather took a turn for the worse. The standard of play improved dramatically throughout the tournament, with all teams adjusting to the adapted rules of Hi 5 as many of the teams had never played this version before.

The pool matches were hotly contested and led to semi finals between Ellington and St Francis, and St Edmund Campion and Holyport Primary. Both these matches were played with great spirit and determination, with Ellington and Holyport Primary narrowly making the final. This was an exceptionally close game but Holyport Primary just edged ahead to win 3 -2. They now go on to represent the partnership at the county finals on 27th April, where we wish them the best of luck.

A special mention must go to all the umpires, who were all Newlands students from Year 9 – 13, who are currently undertaking the Youth Umpires Award. The standard of umpiring was excellent, with many of the primary teachers commenting on the quality of the umpiring, and all the students learning an enormous amount from this experience.

ALL SAINTS OLYMPIC DAY

On Tuesday 3rd March myself and our 2 Young Ambassadors, Katie S and Katie T, supported by our level 2 sports leaders, held an Olympic Day at one of our family primary schools, All saints Junior School. The day was organised by us and John McKrell, the PLT at All Saints, and involved the entire school being off timetable for the day and taking part in a variety of cross curricular activities all based around an Olympic Theme. The day started with Katie S and I leading an assembly to the whole school (Katie T conveniently had a GCSE Science Module!!) about the Olympic Values, and then each year group went off to undertake one of the four planned activity sessions.

There was the Poetry Grand Slam (thanks Get Set!), a Skeleton Battle, an activity of each class teachers choice, and a 2012 whole school obstacle Challenge. The idea of this was that each year group came outside one at a time (it was freezing!!) and took part in an obstacle circuit with the aim of each pupils score combining to make 2012 circuits by the end of the day. The circuit consisted of skipping, hurdles, ladders, tennis ball balance, agility run and basketball dribble.

It was looking quite tight towards the end of the day but the year 4’s really rose to the challenge as the last group to go, and we completed the challenge with about 10 minutes to spare! During break and lunch, we ran a 2 minute and 12 second skipping challenge, where any interested pupils had a go at completing as many skips as possible within that time. There were prizes for the best boy and girl in each year group. At the end of the day the whole school came back together for another assembly, where each class shared their experience of the day and presented some of the work they had been doing. These included raps with an olympic value theme, posters advertising London 2012, gold medals designed by pupils, a skeleton dance and some clay models of athletes.

All Saints completely embraced the whole day and every child wore their PE kit for the day, as did all the staff and the head!! Everyone had a brilliant day, learned all about the Olympics and the Olympic and Paralympic values, got loads of exercise and had a whole day of fun.

John has already said he would like an Olympic Day each year in the run up to London 2012.
We have Olympic Days organised at 3 of our other primary schools, and we can’t wait!

'PRIMARY SCHOOL GYM COMPETITION’

I recently participated in the Charters and Windsor School Sport Partnership ‘Primary School Gym Competition’ where I judged stages 1 and 3 ‘Key Steps’ vault. It was a great help to me and to most of my fellow gym squad members, judging and leading teams. The session on the Friday before benefitted all that took part and gave the people involved a chance to learn how to judge properly under Svetlana’s supervision. I enjoyed judging on the day because it let me see how different peoples routines require different marking schemes, and being fair and consistent all the way though so that the participating pupils placed correctly and fairly.

I really like helping others as it makes me feel important, I think that everyone who was part of Tuesday’s event was well used and participated with the rest of the sporting community, the display of the members of Gym Squad was different and appreciated by the children taking part and the families and friends watching. It was a fun and enjoyable day for all as well as an informative and a great judging experience.

The fact that we were paired in two’s to judge each piece of apparatus was encouraging and reassuring, as we are new to it and it was kind of scary thinking you could get somebody’s score wrong and cost them an award at the ceremony at the end. It helped that Miss White and Svetlana were walking round offering encouragement and helping those who were unsure of certain aspects of the children’s’ routines.

I think that Magdel and I who were judging on vault 3, found it difficult to keep organized and have the girls in the right order at first but after the first group we were ready and had all of the result slips written and waiting so that we could get the children through their routines as best they could.

Two other gym squad members quoted;

Jasmine: ‘I believe that the chance to judge was good and that I took lots of good key points from Tuesday’s competition, I liked the fact that people were allowed to decide whether to judge or lead teams!’

Magdel: ‘I liked the fact that all of the participants were cheery and wanted to be there as it made me feel happy and glad I joined in’

I think that as people were happy and knew what they were doing the day was better and all worked out well. All of the helpers/team leaders and judges looked happy and looked as if they wanted to be there. I am glad I participated in judging the ‘Primary School’s Gym Festival’ and hope that I will be involved in future ones.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS GYM COMPETITION

Every year there is a primary schools gym competition organised by the Ascot and Maidenhead School Sport Partnership and the Windsor School Sport Partnership. Earlier this year a group of 30 Newlands Girls went to Windsor Leisure Centre to help run the competition. There were two main jobs that the girls had to fill, Group Leaders and Judges. Many of the girls had previously taken a gymnastics judging course, this enabled them to judge three different gymnastic disciplines; floor, vault and body management. For most of them this was there first judging experience and all the girls did a great job, giving fair and confident scores. The other girls where each assigned a group consisting of around 10-15 children. They then had to help guide and assist the children around the competition. They were supportive and helpful; many of the children were shy and need help remembering the several routines they had to perform. The girls did there best to encourage and help them perform to their best ability.

The feedback given to the girls from the schools and children themselves were extremely positive, the girls had left a lasting impression. They were described as confident, helpful, fun and supportive.

The whole day was a huge success, all the girls had fun and enjoyed helping out.
