Leadership & Volunteering

Berkshire Leadership Academy Bradfield College

Berkshire Leadership Academy 2010
Bradfield College

On Monday 29th March we took 4 year 9 students to the Berkshire Leadership Academy to take part in a Netball Organisers Course, an officially recognised leadership qualification from England Netball. We usually invite 6th form students to participate in opportunities like this, but this particular group of students have, throughout the year, demonstrated a real desire to improve their leadership skills in netball, and are also currently undertaking the Netball Youth Umpires Award.

During the day, they had a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, and they learned how to officiate, lead groups of young children, develop netball skills and organise festivals and tournaments. They all learned an enormous amount and are now looking forward to putting it all into practice!!

Report on Leadership Academy 02/04/09

By Sarah Forster

On Thursday 2nd April 16 Year 12 students went to Bradfield College to attend the Berkshire Sport Leadership Academy, designed to develop officiating and leadership skills in a number of different sports.  Students had pre selected their course from rounders, netball, volleyball, and football.

Everyone had time to complete some theory before heading out into the sunshine for practical. Everyone learnt a variety of new skills and drills and how to coach these to younger children. We also learnt how to plan large scale events including festivals and tournaments.

The netballers from Newlands easily won all their matches at the end of the day, demonstrating that they aren’t all that bad at netball after all!

At the end of the day the organisers insisted on us having a big group photo. Great!

Hopefully we can now all take the new skills we have learned to help in clubs both in school and within the community.

A good day, enjoyed by all.
