“A” Level History at Newlands
It is not a requirement to have studied History at GCSE level in order to take an AS or an A-Level course in the subject. It is important that you have an inquiring mind, an interest in the past and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively.
An AS or Advanced Subsidiary is the first half of the A-level course and comprises two units of work. The full A-level comprises the 2 AS Units plus 2 more units studied at a high level. Each unit comprises an historical period, issue or event chosen from a list of options. Units will be assessed in a variety of ways. At Newlands students study two Tudor History units (16th century) and two Modern American units (20th century).
During the course students will learn:
· about the significance of events, individuals and issues;
· how and why societies have changed over time;
· to understand the nature of historical evidence and the methods used by historians to analyse and evaluate it;
· to develop an understanding of how the past has been interpreted and represented;
· to express your own ideas confidently and effectively.
The course will appeal to students who:
· have an interest in the way the world has changed and developed through time;
· enjoy the investigation of an historical issue;
· enjoy debate and like putting forward a well-argued case;
· want to study a subject which encourages them to consider evidence and make up their own minds;
· want to keep their options open. History is widely regarded as a useful qualification for a wide range of higher education or career choices.
Students who study AS and A-level history develop skills which are recognised and valued by employers, universities and colleges. History at this level provides an excellent foundation for a number of popular careers including journalism, law and business.
