Year 10 Industrial Practises
Students will learn about a variety of industrial practises. They work in teams to design and manufacture a toile of a childrenswear playsuit (e.g. Dungarees). They will use product analysis and market research techniques, use of CAD/CAM embroidery machine and learn about production planning strategies. They will be taught about factory layouts and batch production methods. Students will improve their individual practical skills through producing samples of a patch pocket, sleeve and collar. These skills will then be translated into their final team design. They will build on previous knowledge from the garment manufacture unit to adapt and use a commercial paper pattern.
Year 10 Garment Manufacture
Students will learn how to construct a simple garment, following a commercial paper pattern. They will work individually to produce a skirt. They will build on previous knowledge from the industrial manufacture unit to adapt and use a commercial paper pattern.
Year 11 Textiles – GCSE Coursework
Students follow the design process to design and make either a fashion product, accessories or an interior product. Students have a choice of 5 design briefs to follow, any of which can be tailor made to meet their own requirements. The product which is manufactured is entirely up to the student to design and then produce.
Key Learning Outcomes
Good understanding of industrial practices including product analysis, market research, comparative shop surveys, CAD and CAM.
Good understanding of the design process including research, specifications (different types) and manufacturing (commercial patterns, flow charts, gantt charts, planning).
Increased knowledge of manufacturing techniques and industrial processes (e.g. cutting equipment, stay stitching, lay plans, use of specific machine attachments).
Utilise an industrial paper pattern to adapt and then manufacture a garment to an acceptable standard.
Completed samples of darts, seams, hems, patch pocket, collar and sleeves, which are well produced.
Selected and used appropriate construction techniques on their manufactured designs.
Made a valuable contribution to the manufacture of the groups’ toile and final presentation.
Produced an in-depth research assignment which utilised ICT effectively (Publisher) to produce a magazine cover which stylises their skirt.
Have followed the design process successfully and produced a product which is of high quality.
Have utilised equipment successfully and skilfully with accuracy.
Evidence of their good level of knowledge regarding industrial practices.
Utilised effective and impressive communication skills throughout their coursework (both verbal and written).
