Careers Information for Students

Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance at Newlands

At Newlands we are committed to providing impartial information advice and guidance to each pupil. As a public sign of this commitment, we are working towards the Investor in Careers award, which is a kite mark for quality in careers education and guidance. It is the most widely used standard of its type in England.

All pupils have access to careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) as part of their curriculum. The programme is delivered in PSHE lessons and through subject lessons. This allows pupils to explore individual career options, gain an awareness of the job market and to develop the core skills needed for employment. Pupils at Newlands are supported by members of staff and by a work experience programme delivered in conjunction with the local Education Business Partnership.

All pupils have access to a comprehensive and well-resourced Careers Library.

At KS3 (Years 7 – 9) - Students will participate in a range of activities which will include learning about themselves; their personality, strengths and qualities. They will begin to explore different career options in the modern world. Year 9 pupils will focus on KS4 options and making appropriate subject choices.

At KS4 (Years 10-11) - Year 10 students will undertake a week’s work experience and they will prepare for this during careers lessons. This will include CV and job application preparation, mock interviews and skills for work sessions. Year 11s will be offered an individual and/or group session with a Connexions Personal Advisor and will focus on their Post-16 options, while learning how to make effective transitions from KS4.

At KS5 (Years 12-13) – Year 12 and 13 pupils will receive guidance on using the Careers Library effectively, making their post-18 options and filling in UCAS forms. They will also attend higher education events.

In October 2009 the Government launched a new strategy for IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) and published statutory guidance on the principles of Impartial Careers Education. One of the key messages within the strategy was to extend the statutory duty for careers education in schools and colleges up to 18 years of age. Newlands has a comprehensive careers programme for all pupils from Year7 through to Year 13.

Mrs Tarryn Wingfield is the Careers Coordinator. She can be contacted via email: blact020@rbwm.org.
