Careers Information

Newlands Girls' School is committed to developing the life chances of all students and aims to encourage and inspire pupils through a comprehensive programme of CEIAG.

Employability is not just an add-on but a golden thread, weaved throughout the school's leadership and governance, curriculum and careers events.

The school has a dedicated Careers Co-Ordinator who is a qualified Careers Advisor, running termly ‘drop in sessions’.  There is also a careers website: www.ngscareers.co.uk  which can be accessed by students and parents/carers at any time and should be the ‘port of call’ for careers information.  On this site there are useful resources and links to sites such as the National Careers Service.

As well as discussions and activities forming part of the curriculum and posters in individual departments, there is also help and advice via one to one mentoring.  All key stages also have at least one careers event per academic year.

At KS3 (Years 7 – 9) - Students participate in a range of activities which includes learning about themselves; their personality, strengths and qualities. They will begin to explore different career options in the modern world and gain an awareness of how they begin to research and plan various career paths. Year 9 pupils will focus on KS4 options and making appropriate subject choices for their chosen careers.  All year groups will meet with employers and other outside agencies to gain independent and impartial advice about the options which are best suited to them as individuals.

At KS4 (Years 10-11) - Year 10 students are given the opportunity to arrange their own work experience, as well as taking part in a careers event which will develop their employability skills. Year 11s will focus on their Post-16 options and learning how to make effective transitions from KS4.  They also take part in a mock interview day and careers fair.  Both year groups will meet with employers and other outside agencies to gain independent and impartial advice about the options which are best suited for them as individuals.

At KS5 (Years 12-13) Year 12 students are given the opportunity to arrange their own work experience. Both years will also have access to a number of employer led careers events such as a Careers Fair.  There is also a Higher Education day and all students will be supported with their UCAS application or be given support on researching other opportunities such as apprenticeships.  One to one mentoring on all of these topics will also be offered by two Learning Mentors.
